To provide for the establishment of the Special Envoy to Promote Religious Freedom of Religious Minorities in the Near East and South Central Asia. House Resolution 440 has officially been introduced by Rep. Frank Wolf as of January 25, 2011 with 14 co-sponsors (official title is above). As of today, HR 440 has 28 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle and the call is now out to mobilize groups like the Coptic Orthodox Christians (of Egypt) and others to make sure this resolution gets the political backing it needs to move forward.
Below you will find two things. 1) A summary of HR 440 and 2) Instructions of how to locate and contact your representative in Congress. Assuming you agree with the resolution and have located the contact information for your representative the last step is to make a call to their office and tell them you want them to support HR440 and if they have already signed onto it, tell them "thank you." Politics is a tough business and encouragement
to do something is equally important as gratitude
for doing something.
Summary of HR 440:1/25/2011--Directs the President to appoint a Special Envoy to Promote Religious Freedom of Religious Minorities in the Near East and South Central Asia within the Department of State. Authorizes the Special Envoy, subject to direction by the President and the Secretary of State, to represent the United States in matters and cases relevant to religious freedom in: - contacts with foreign governments, intergovernmental organizations, and specialized agencies of the United Nations (U.N.), the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe, and other international organizations; and
- multilateral conferences and meetings relevant to religious freedom. Defines "Near East" as Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and including the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Defines "South Central Asia" as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
How to Get Involved:This letter highlights the steps outlined above regarding how to locate your congressional representative and even what to say if you are unsure while on the phone. This letter is a good resource and includes background information for anyone with interest on the topic and should be recirculated freely. Most important item at hand now is making sure our voices are heard in support of this resolution and as much as possible keep the religious minorities in Egypt and elsewhere in the region on the front pages of the newspapers especially now with so much else going on in the same region at the same time.
